6 Efficient House Packing Tips You Should Know

Moving to a new home is an exciting time for most, especially if you are doing so for work or because you are finally able to invest in property of your own. Before you begin packing up for your big move, there are a few tips to keep in mind to maximize efficiency while minimizing stress commonly associated with relocating.

1- Avoid Procrastinating

Procrastination is one of the biggest downfalls that often occurs when individuals are moving to a new location. While you may believe you have time to pack all of your items with just a week left, you are much more likely to feel frazzled and overwhelmed once you begin when you put off packing for too long. As soon as you as make the decision to move, begin organizing individual rooms in your home and eliminating items you no longer want or need. Set goals for each room to stick to as your moving date gets closer to ensure you are on the right track and that you have enough time to complete all of your tasks with ease.

2- Organize Your Belongings

Whenever you have plans to move to a new location, it is important to organize all of your furnishings and personal belongings into categories. When you want to downsize and avoid overspending on transportation and shipping, consider using the following categories while rummaging through your items:

  • Keep: Items you intend to keep and move to your new home.
  • Donate: Belongings that are in good condition but you no longer have a use for personally.
  • Give Away: Designated furniture or belongings you intend to give to family members and friends.
  • Sell: Items you intend to list for sale (or sell during a yard/garage sale) before the big moving date arrives.
  • Trash: Belongings that are no longer working or of any value.

3- Pack One Room at a Time

Packing your entire home in one day can quickly become stressful and overwhelming, especially when you are on a tight deadline and have a moving date set in place. Pack one room at a time without meandering into another room to begin packing. Focusing on one room at a time is a way to remain motivated and focused on the areas you are working in, rather than becoming discombobulated or confused about where to begin each time you enter another area of your home.

4- Use Labels While Packing

Even if you believe you will remember where you packed each item in your home, the chances are you likely will not. Include packing labels on each individual box you tape up and include an overview of the contents inside. Add specific labels for boxes with items you deem necessary to easily find them once you arrive at your new home and begin the unpacking process.

5- Use Boxes Made for Moving

While it is tempting to acquire free boxes from local liquor stores and shops in your area, you may find the free boxes you gather to be unstable and flimsy, especially when packing heavier items or items with more value. Stick to using boxes made for moving and order or purchase them ahead of time to ensure you have enough storage space for all of the items you intend to take with you during your move.

6- Sell and Donate Belongings

Selling and donating your belongings is another way to expedite the moving process, especially if you intend to downsize as you move. Schedule a donation pickup with a local charity organization to downsize your closet and other home decor items you no longer want or need. Host a yard or garage sale to attract nearby locals who may have an interest in your unwanted belongings. Sell your items online using services such as eBay, Etsy, or even Facebook Marketplace to generate some extra cash to help pay for moving expenses.

Knowing how to pack efficiently for an upcoming move is not only a way to alleviate stress, but it also helps with expediting the moving process altogether. With the right packing tips and adequate preparation, move to your new home or place of living with peace of mind and without feeling overwhelmed once all of your belongings and furniture begin to arrive.
