7 Ways to Give Your Home a Rustic Look

Even if this is your first foray into the world of decorating yourself, you are in good company with trying to upgrade your home. The home décor market is on fire right now, and plenty of homeowners are embracing their own style in making their homes a rustic getaway. Farmhouse chic has become one of the mainstays of interior decorating themes in recent years and shows no signs of waning in popularity in the near future. These simple upgrades to your décor will have you relaxed in rustic style in no time flat and do not require you to spend an arm and a leg to get there.

1. Pallet Shelves

No rustic home would be complete without at least a few accents made of pallets. Pallet shelves can be sized to any room and are perfect for holding small accents. They go particularly well in the bathroom and can be carried through to other rooms as well.

2. Planked Wall

Take the wood look a step further by covering an entire accent wall in wooden slats. Make sure to pick a shade that will complement your flooring. Reclaimed barn wood makes for a great addition to any accent wall, but you can complete the project on a budget by carefully selecting and sanding down pallet wood.

3. Wrapping Accents in Twine

Take any furniture handles from drab to fab by wrapping the center portion with some twin. Secure it with strong furniture glue and be sure to allow it enough time to dry before using. To take this trend a step further, consider wrapping the base of an old lamp in matching twine. It can really tie the farmhouse theme together across multiple rooms in your house to have furniture accents with similar designs.

4. Barn Door Headboards

Take the rustic look all the way to your bedroom with a headboard made out of sliding barn doors. This is easier to put together than actually installing sliding barn doors as a working door in your home. The headboard can be made from reclaimed barn wood or pieced together from quality pallet wood scraps. Be sure that it is sanded down as smooth as possibly before adding a stain and top coat of sealant. Add an optional shelf to the barn door headboard for a unique way to display your favorite family pictures or add some extra storage space to your sleeping area.

5. De-clutter Picture Frames

This is a great opportunity to take stock of your picture frames and coordinate them within the rustic theme. This is probably one of the least expensive rustic décor upgrades you can make in your home. The key is to choose a style of wooden frames and stay within that framework for all of the pictures that you hang or display on shelves. They do not necessarily all have to match perfectly, but they should stay within the same family of wood stain.

6. Whitewash your Kitchen Cabinets

Having dark wooden cabinets can actually detract from the rustic look of your home. Consider painting your kitchen cabinets white to create a pop of brightness against your otherwise wood-dominated kitchen. If you have a kitchen table, consider painting the top of the table a matching shade of white as your cabinets. The wood accents will look even more rustic next to a new coat of white paint. This pairs especially well with the twine-wrapped furniture accents throughout the rest of your house.

7. Wooden Fireplace Mantle

Brick fireplaces can be iconic, but a wooden fireplace mantle is more in keeping with the farmhouse theme. You may be able to have the wooden fireplace professionally installed over your existing mantle to cut down on demolition costs. Consider leaving the mantle unpainted to make it look even more rustic. Clean, simple lines are best for staying true to the farmhouse theme.
