5 Signs You Have Bed Bugs

Itchy Red Spots

Bedbugs feed on human blood and can cause irritation. The skin becomes inflamed after each bite. The red spots are usually clustered in a single area of the body.

The bedbug bites may cause the skin to become sensitive to certain materials or fabrics. Bed bugs usually bite in a specific pattern. In most cases, there is a straight line of multiple bites.

Bedbugs are usually attracted to a certain area. The saliva that is released from the bites can create red welts. Although the bites can result in itching and other forms of discomfort, they are usually not dangerous.

It is best to see a dermatologist for a proper diagnosis. Washing the affected area with a mild disinfectant and water can alleviate inflammation.

A dermatologist may recommend corticosteroids to reduce swelling. Certain topical ointments can be applied to eliminate harmful bacteria.

Bed Bug Shells and Fecal Matter

Bed bugs shed their exoskeleton several times throughout their life cycle. Depending on the number of bed bugs, noticeable patches of skin may appear around the bed. This process of shedding is sometimes referred to as molting.

The size of the shells changes as the bed bug grows. An infestation can occur if not properly exterminated. Shells are usually transparent.

Bed bugs are notoriously messy and leave behind liquid waste. This waste carries around an unpleasant order. Waste and other stains may be found in other areas outside of the bed. The accumulation of waste increases the longer the bed bugs stay around.

Waste from the bed bugs can lower the quality of the air by introducing impurities. This can increase the chances of becoming sick. A strong detergent or cleaning agent must be used to clean the stains.

An Unpleasant Odor

There is a combination of waste and other liquid by-products produced by the bugs that can leave a foul smell. If the room smells bad, this is a sign of an infestation.

The smell is also commonly caused by a release of pheromones from the bugs. These pheromones are used to attract other bugs or to alert them of possible danger. The smell can be worse in areas that include hair because of a higher concentration of sweat glands.

The odor can permeate through the skin because the bugs inject saliva with each bite. A strong cleaning solution is required to remove the smell. It is important that the solution is not harsh to the skin.

The environment plays a significant role when it comes to smell. Bad smells can travel faster through the warm air. This increases the chances of a smell penetrating the walls. Walls that absorb pollutants and other toxins can become discolored or permanently damaged.

Poor Quality of Sleep

Bed bugs are most active during the night and begin to feast. If bed bugs are hungry enough, they can also bite during the daytime as well. This results in uncomfortable nights and can lead to further sleeping problems like insomnia. Mornings are marked by a persistent itch due to numerous bug bites.

It is best not to persevere through such a situation because bed bugs reproduce at a rapid rate. The problem is unlikely to go away on its own.

Bed bugs can attach to various articles of clothing while in bed. This allows them to travel with their host and continue feeding. As a result, feelings of paranoia may arise from the constant biting.

Blood Stains

Bed bugs can break the skin and this results in some bleeding. The release of blood can attract more bed bugs and create larger groups.

Blood stains caused by bed bugs are usually light in color. Sometimes, the blood is from the bed bug themselves. Bugs frequently get crushed while a person is moving throughout their sleep.

How to Handle Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are fortunately not dangerous and do not transmit diseases. However, bed bugs can cause severe irritation to the skin and create an unpleasant living environment.

It is best to contact an exterminator as soon as possible. This can reduce the risk of any property damage and further irritation. A dry, room-temperature, and clean environment is ideal for keeping bed bugs at bay.
