6 Awesome Activities To Do in Barbados
If you are planning to visit the Caribbean paradise of Barbados, you will find no shortage of awesome activities to do. This includes beaches, parks and caves. Here are some of the best places to visit:
Barbados Boardwalk
Connecting the Camelot and Accra beaches, the Barbados Boardwalk is a 1-mile wooden walkway a few miles from Bridgetown. Not only are there beautiful ocean views to be seen all along the way, but you can often see crabs and turtles, too.
For the best views, travel along the boardwalk at either sunrise or dusk. If you do traverse the boardwalk during the afternoon hours, though, be sure to wear shoes as the sun can make the wood extremely hot. Finally, not only are there public restrooms nearby, but there are many fine restaurants and bars within walking distance.
Harrison’s Cave
If you want to get away from the beaches, a good place to go is Harrison’s Cave. This is a limestone cavern with streams and many forms of calcite deposits, including a famous stalagmite formation known as the “The Village.”
There are many different tours you can take you through the cave, including one on a tramway, which lasts about an hour. During the tour, at many points the tram will stop and you can look at the formations up close and personal. The cave also has walk-in tours and children’s tours as well. It has a gift shop, too.
Hunte’s Garden
Located a handful of miles from Bathsheba Beach, Hunte’s Garden is a recreation of a Caribbean forest. There you can not only see a variety of flora, but also exotic animals, such as monkeys.
The garden is open every day, and the entrance fee includes both snacks and rum punch. The owner of the garden — famed horticulturist Anthony Hunte — is often around and he can answer any questions you might have about the place. There is also a gift shop there.
Bathsheba Beach
If you are looking for a terrific beach to visit while you are in Barbados, look no further than Bathsheba Beach. This is the beach many locals visit, and it also popular with surfers from around the world.
In addition to the incredible ocean views, there are many terrific rock formations to see there as well. It is a great location for a picnic or to fly some kites, and while there are no restaurants in the area, there are a number of rum shacks nearby if you are looking for some refreshments. Keep in mind that the water is a little rough there, but it is the perfect place to dip your feet.
St. Nicholas Abbey
Barbados is famous for its rum, and you can tour one of its most famous distilleries at St. Nicholas Abbey. This 350-year-old mansion features a museum, gardens and orchards.
During the two-hour tour, you can taste rum samples, which are included in the tour’s cost. If you go on either a Wednesday or a Thursday, you can further watch them ground the sugar cane that is used in making the rum. They also have a cafe that offers sandwiches, salads and desserts, and they have a gift shop, too.
Carlisle Bay
For those who love snorkeling, there is no better place to visit on Barbados than Carlisle Bay. There are 6 shipwrecked vessels in the bay in which you can explore. There are also many forms of exotic sea life there, including turtles, lobsters and a variety of colorful fish. You can also rent jet skis and kayaks there.
The bay is located just a few miles from Bridgetown, and, unlike Bathsheba Beach, the water there is calm, so it is a great place for a swim, too. What’s more, there are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby.
